Further Education - Dancing
Have you danced for many years and are wondering where you can go now with Irish dance? The Master of Arts in Irish Traditional Dance Performance at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick, is a one-year, full-time, taught postgraduate programme. It is unique in that it is the only programme of its type at any university in the world. The programme provides advanced training in Irish traditional dance performance practices, choreography and research skills. Master dance tutors are invited to work with and to mentor dance students in both solo and ensemble work while students are also encouraged to choreograph their own work. Together with practical dance workshops students also attend lectures, tutorials and seminars. In such an environment, the programme provides an artistically secure environment for students to develop their own voices through the medium of Irish dance. Applicants must have a high standard in Irish dance and should have either a primary degree or professional equivalence as a dancer. This programme is the first degree of its type at an Irish university, and indeed, in Europe at the time of its inception. Ethnochoreology is an interdisciplinary subject which examines dance, or any movement system, within its cultural context. Students learn about theoretical concepts developed in the Social Sciences and apply these within the context of field research. Through lectures, tutorials, lecture demonstrations and dance workshops, students develop the conceptual and methodological skills necessary for both undertaking independent research and for a reflective understanding and awareness of dance in its cultural context. The programme provides an essential foundation for those wishing to pursue dance research to Doctoral level. Applicants must hold either a First Honours or a 2.1. Honours primary degree.
